Home Based Services in Action
The Mulvaney's Journey
The Mulvaney family was referred to NYAP to receive our Home Based Services to support the reunification of their three adolescent children following nearly four years of the family being separated and the children placed in foster care.
The children were removed because of significant crack and cocaine use by both Mr. and Mrs. Mulvaney which resulted in their inability to meet the basic needs of their children. The children were eventually reunified with their parents in the Mulvaney's small, two-bedroom rental home over a period of 30 days.
NYAP's Home Based Services Child Family Team worked with the family on how to effectively communicate to heal the grief, resentment and anger related to the substance abuse and family separation as well as to enhance the Mulvaney's parenting skills with adolescents.
Natural supports were identified to assist the family with child care in the evenings while Mr. and Mrs. Mulvaney continued to work their recovery program. Individual therapy was implemented to address the behavioral needs of their oldest child.
Finally, the Child Family Team assisted the family with finding and moving to an affordable rental home with four bedrooms.
The Mulvaney family was discharged successfully after seven months of NYAP's Home Based Services with a demonstrated track record of crisis self-management and a solid support network.
This is an excellent example of the philosophy that NYAP has embraced since 1978; the the primary focus must be holistically placed on preserving and unifying families and strengthening the communities they call home.
