Five Important Reasons to Become a Foster Parent

Leap of Faith
We all need the love and support of a parent or a mentor.  That one person in your life who will listen to what you have to say, understand where you have been and care about where you are going tomorrow.  Becoming a foster parent is just that.  It is taking that leap of faith, reaching out and stepping up to the challenge of helping youth until they can be reunited with their own family or a relative.  It is about being someone who will stand by them when the chips are down.  If this is who you are or who you want to be, becoming a NYAP foster parent may just what you are looking for.

One Family, One Community
Opening your home to a child or group of siblings may be the single most important event in the life of that child. There are so many wonderful family experiences and life lessons to share and be learned when you choose to foster a youth.  So many things like a hot meal, a warm bed and someone who genuinely cares about your well-being are things that many of us take for granted.  A foster parent can give youth the care and support they need, at a time when they need it most.  Eventually, when the youth is reunited with their family or a relative, they take with them the lessons and experiences that a loving foster family has shared.  Foster parents make a difference in the lives of the families they help, the youth they foster and the communities where they live.

Fill Up an Empty Nest
After raising your own children and working hard to achieve your own life goals, you have a new, different, maybe even better perspective on life and the footprint you want to leave behind in this world.  Choosing to foster a child or group of brothers and sisters is one way to fill up your empty nest and make a difference in the life of a child, your own life and in the effort to strengthen and preserve the child’s own family.

Spiritual Enrichment
Whatever your spiritual beliefs may be, you have been blessed with the talents, gifts and open heart you need to be an instrument of positive change for youth, families and in your community. When you open your home to a youth in need, that act of kindness may bring you the balance and peace of mind you have been searching for.  Many foster parents talk about the good feeling they have knowing when the children or youth they foster return to their family or to a relative, in their hearts they did their best to provide them with a loving, nurturing home, in a time of need.

Giving Back
Many people feel it is their responsibility to share their life experiences.  They want to create an opportunity to help others and to watch them learn and grow.  They want to play a part in strengthening their communities and preserving families who, for whatever reason, are in a time of need. Maybe you were fortunate enough to have a wonderful childhood of your own and now you are ready to give back.  If this sounds like you, contact us about exploring the idea of foster parenting!
