The CANEI Program

"We will never give up on a child until they succeed."

The National Youth Advocate Program’s CANEI Program is a 26-week, strength-based, in-home treatment program that teaches youth how to live in and respect the community they call home and to  develop compassion and empathy  for the people close to them and for others.

Through intensive, home-based services, group-based sessions and a multi-dimensional approach, CANEI youth transform themselves by cultivating a sense of self, purpose and responsibility.  They positively reconnect with others and live productively and respectfully in their community.

COA Innovative Practice Award

In 2008, The Council on Accreditation (COA) created the Innovative Practice Award to “acknowledge forward thinking accredited organizations that implement new and forward thinking practices that enhance the quality of services provided to vulnerable children, youth, adults and families."

NYAP was one of only four recipients to receive this prestigious award in 2008 in recognition of it's flexible, creative and innovative practices offered through the CANEI program.

The mission of CANEI is to:

  • Teach youth how to live respectfully and productively in the community they call home.
  • Prevent out-of-home placement and preserve and strengthen families.
  • If placed out of the home, the goal is to reunify youth with their family of origin or develop an alternative permanent living arrangement as soon as it is appropriate to do so.
  • Successfully transition and integrate youth into the community as positive and productive members.

CANEI Strategies

Strength-based approaches that help youth identify and develop positive personal traits and strengths and to build on and strengthen existing capacities and abilities.  NYAP has an abiding faith that every person has an innate ability to learn, grow and develop based on their inner strengths and the power to change.

NYAP embraces the philosophy of Constant and Never Ending Improvement and never giving up on a child. As a part of our ongoing commitment to youth and families, once youth are accepted into the CANEI Program we will not give up on them until they succeed.  We will not eject youth from the CANEI program regardless of setbacks, difficulties or behavioral issues.

Positive Youth Development that seeks to enable youth to establish a sense of internal understanding and self-control through the development of values and attitudes that help them define and identify themselves in relationships with others. CANEI helps youth distinguish between elders (the mature leaders and positive role models that are available) and “olders” (the negative role models and influences always predominant in the lives of at-risk youth) and to seek guidance and support when it is needed.

Therapeutic Group Work that focuses on reinforcing the link between thinking/feeling and behavior to propose alternative responses and reactions to stress and/or conflict.

Intensive staff to youth ratios of two treatment advocates/coordinators to a maximum of ten families allows staff the opportunity to maintain daily contact with youth and families, seven days a week including weekends and holidays.  NYAP staff members seek to immediately establish open, positive two-way communication and   maintain that commitment 24 hours a day, everyday, for as long as the youth is in the CANEI program.

NYAP stresses staying connected and building community, using formal and informal resources/supports to provide youth the best opportunity to maintain their commitment to what they have learned in CANEI and continue on the right path.

We are here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
